A Salon Blowout at Home in 5 Steps

“Quarantine hair” has been a super hot topic lately, and for good reason! When people everywhere lost the ability to hit the salon for a style pick-me-up, it gave them a brand-new perspective in understanding the value of these services.

Luckily, we at Nuovo Salons are open in all three of our Sarasota and Bradenton locations, so the urgency of addressing that “quarantine hair” — roots, shagginess and health — has let up. But even so, with limitations still in place at Nuovo and other salons, learning some key styling tricks remains essential.

Executing a professional blowout in the comfort of your home can easily be achieved by following these five simple steps. Here’s how!

STEP ONE: GET THE RIGHT TOOLS

Using the right hair tool is the MOST important aspect of giving yourself a professional-looking blowout. While the products you use are also key, the tools you use are a bigger contributing factor in what your finished style will look like.

We only use and recommend the very best hair dryer—Harry Josh Pro Dryers. They were designed by the celebrity hairstylist to be lightweight, compact and efficient. With multiple heat settings and speeds of up to 94 mph, this blow dryer is suitable for all hair types, and cuts drying time in half. Its true cold shot helps set style and minimizes frizz. Oh, and did we mention it comes in a très chic mint green color? Harry Josh Pro Dryers are available at all Nuovo Salons in Sarasota and Bradenton—allow our guest care team to select one for you!

STEP TWO: PRE-DRY

For best results, and to avoid unnecessary damage, your hair needs to be from 70-80% dry before beginning the blowout. There’s no wrong technique when it comes to pre-drying, so whether you choose to air-dry, towel-dry or rough-dry with a blow dryer (on the lowest heat setting possible) is up to you. By letting your hair get mostly dry before starting your blowout, you not only reduce the time you’ll have to spend styling it, but also the amount of tension caused by brushing and drying soaking-wet strands.

For even better results, we use Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother to create a smooth surface on hair, making it easier to style in the long run. Apply a small amount of this paraben-free product to damp hair, and then continue with the pre-drying process.

STEP THREE: PREP

To prevent heat damage and make hair look as healthy and bouncy as possible, you need thermal protection. Aveda’s Speed Of Light Blow Dry Accelerator Spray primes, protects, and cuts dry-time in half. Separate pre-dried hair into four sections and spray all over to ensure every strand is coated.

STEP FOUR: TECHNIQUE

Section off your hair and individually blow out each section. This step is the trickiest, and most tiresome, so we suggest sitting down. (This is why having a lightweight dryer like the Harry Josh Pro Dryer is so important!) You’ll have to play around and learn what works for you, but the crucial thing to remember is to angle the dryer so that air is blowing downward onto your strands as opposed to upward (this will create frizz). When each section is fully dry, finish it with a cold shot to seal the hair cuticle, add shine and lock-in the style.

Getting the back sections of your hair can be tricky, so focus more on shaping the front—if the hair framing your face looks good, the rest will follow suit! As for a blowout brush, we recommend a round brush to get luscious waves or an Aveda paddle brush for a straighter look.

STEP FIVE:  SEAL THE DEAL

To finish smooth ends and keep that healthy glow, apply a finishing product — we love Aveda’s Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss— and voila! The perfect, bouncy blowout done in the comfort of your own home. Take a nice long look in the mirror, pat yourself on the back and toss that gorgeous hair!
