Making Your Scent Signature: Stand Out with Perfume Layering.

You know that moment when you walk past someone and exclaim, “What fragrance is that?!” Team NUOVO sure does. When picking out the perfect scent, many of us strive to be the person on the other end of that statement.

The fragrances you choose to wear show the world a little bit about your personality. And in a market saturated with mass-produced scents, perfume layering allows people to stand out and make a memorable impression.

NUOVO Salons happen to know a thing or two about looking fabulous and smelling even better, so read on for our tips to help you discover your signature layered scent and smell just as unique as you feel.

How do I know which scents go together?

Knowing the notes of each scent you plan on layering is the most important step in this process. A quick Google search, “What are the notes of fragrance name”, should do the trick.

For something sweet and warm, try pairing a vanilla perfume with a scent that focuses more heavily on sandalwood. If you’re looking for something earthy yet uplifting, pairing a rose scent with something heavy in patchouli creates a fragrance with depth. Another pairing of notes that we love is combining any woody fragrance (cedarwood, sandalwood, etc.) with a more citrusy blend such as bergamot. This contrast of smoky and citrus creates a more masculine yet airy vibe.

At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong combination of fragrance. Push the envelope and try something new!

What is the best way to apply them?

As far as application goes, the fragrance on top tends to be what shines through the most. You can be strategic when it comes to which scent you spray on top of the other depending on your mood for the day.

That being said, if you have a perfume oil that you are combining with an alcohol-based spray, the spray will bind to the oil making your fragrance last all day. The oil seeps further into your skin than the spray on its own, so once the spray binds to the oil, you emit the combined scent as your skin warms.

NUOVO’s Signature Scents

We are all about smelling good at NUOVO Salons, especially when we’re up close and personal with our lovely clients all day!

NUOVO co-owner, Terry, shared his signature scent secrets. Terry loves combining Le Labo Rose 31 with Le Labo Santal 33. Santal is very bergamot and sandalwood-heavy while Rose is, well, rose-driven with just the right amount of wood (which takes the rose into an acceptable men’s choice). These two blends play off one another to create a smooth (yet interesting) unisex scent. He’s also loving AVEDA’s “Plant Beauty” Pure-fume, “Super Naturals” Pure-fume and the Nutriplenish Aroma Concentrate. And his favorite daytime aroma? French Lover by Pierre Bourdon for the Parisian fragrance house of Frederic Malle.

Co-Owner James Amato favors “woodsy/spicy” notes that bring warmth and comfort. He’s especially attracted to Frederic Malle’s Musc Ravageur, an aroma that hits all the cues. James, as a result of his travels through Egypt, fell under the spell of “Oud” wood notes. “Alone or as a part of a more complex aroma, this note sings to me”. Because of the underlying notes, in collaboration with spicy top notes, all the fragrances in this arena can be layered for a plethora of olfactory delights!

Director of Operations Mandy Ford, shared her very sophisticated layering of choice. When visiting the Fueguia 1833 store in Milan, Italy, Mandy picked up the perfect pair: Malena and Agua Magnoliana. Both fragrances’ top note is magnolia, while Malena pulls a bit more bergamot, giving Mandy a feminine and refreshing signature scent.
