Spring Makeup Trends: Sailing Off Into the Sunset

Navigating the warm weather with Inner Sunset, Aveda's dramatic spring/summer 2016 makeup collection.

The Florida Gulf Coast is said to boast the world’s most impressive sunsets (and I am inclined to agree!)  . . .  so we makeup fanatics at Nuovo are particularly fond of this year’s spring/ summer makeup line from Aveda. The Indian Sunset palette contains both vivid jewel tones and soft pastels, reminiscent of the sun’s rays as it sinks dramatically into the ocean.

Besides feeling like home, the Indian Sunset line is predictably right on point with 2016’s hottest makeup trends. Here’s how we’re using the gorgeous colors of this limited-edition collection this spring, alongside some tried-and-true Aveda makeup faves.

1. Candy-Apple Lips

This particular playful shade of red popped on the runways for Dolce & GabbanaJason WuOscar de la Renta and more. Aveda’s answer for spring and summer 2016: Nourish-Mint™ Lip Glaze in Cherry Nectar. We love how sheer it is  . . .  perfect for both night and day. The hidden benefits? It’s infused with plant emollients and clinically proven to moisturize, plump, and smooth the look of fine lines around your lips. With organic vanilla and mint, it’s oh-so-appealing for you (and anyone you may be smooching).

2. Gemstone Chic

Bye-bye “no makeup” look, hello rich, saturated tones inspired by some favorite baubles  . . .   emeralds, rubies, amethysts, turquoise, aquamarine  . . .  and of course the shimmery sparkle of diamonds. DVF loved them, and so did Monique Lhuillier, and so do we. Create a monochromatic look with Petal Essence eye colors in Lilac Glow and Amethyst Dawn, with Violet Blossom liner (left) or with colors in the Aqua Pearl palette and Sea Fern liner (right).

3. Pinks and Peaches

Once reserved for the lips and cheeks, these colors are showing up big-time on eyes this spring  . . .  with gorgeous results. AltuzarraErdem and Lanvin featured these looks on the catwalks, and the Indian Sunset collection interprets them for everyday. Peach Nectar and Desert Clay (below) blend together beautifully (along with a swipe of liner in Black Orchid) for that fresh, yet unexpected pop of color.

 4. That Gorgeous Glow

While 2015 was all about the contour, 2016 is all about the glow: healthy, luminous skin. This is one of the most realistic trends to come down the runways (at MarchesaAlberta Ferretti  and Marc Jacobs, to name a few). The look is actually: a) wearable and b) flattering to just about everyone. One caveat: it can be tough to pull this off without looking greasy or having obvious shimmer on the face.

Luckily, we have one of our all-time favorite go-to Aveda products to the rescue. Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15 pulls triple duty as moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen. It’s super sheer, nourishing and provides excellent coverage  . . .  in short, ideal for creating that lit-from-within finish.

5. Bold Brows

Having great eyebrows is possibly one of the most overlooked beauty must-dos out there, so we’re glad this trend is here to stay for a while! Well-shaped and defined brows give you an instant eye lift. Click the photo for a tutorial on how to groom your brows and play them up for daytime (just go a little heavier on the shading come evening).

6. The Colorblock Eye

We saw extreme versions of a “colorblock mask” at Chanel and eyes at Betsey Johnson, but this look can be brought into the real world without much hassle. Use generous splashes of saturated color with careful blending where the shades meet. As for the colors themselves? There are no rules, my dear  . . .  just play with shades you love! Because above all, makeup is supposed to be fun. Below are shades of the Aqua Pearl palette with a double layer of Lilac Glow to create a beautiful peacock-tail effect.
